Every dog deserves to be loved, so we’ve selected 7 special dogs from around the country that have been overlooked time and time again. Some are senior dogs, some have special needs, and some are passed over for reasons we simply can’t understand – but, they all deserve to spend their lives with a family of their own.
Keegan was brought to the Humane Society of Raleigh County in Beckley, West Virginia nearly two years ago as a stray.
After more than a year at the shelter, he began to go “cage crazy.” He started to develop anxiety, barking and jumping at adopters and other dogs walking past. Shelter staff saw the decline in his mental health and moved him into their Paws for Hope prison program.
The incredible program serves to rehabilitate both shelter dogs and inmates and has really proven to be an excellent program for Keegan! The program, which pairs overlooked adoptable dogs with inmates who have been carefully selected and professionally trained, has allowed Keegan’s true personality to shine!
He loves to play and is very happy. It takes him a little while to warm up to strangers because all this attention is so new to him. He’s quickly picked up on all basic commands and even knows roll over!
While he’s finally getting the love and attention he so deserves, what Keegan would really love is a family of his own!
A little more about me…
Dog’s Name: Keegan
Age: 2-3 years
How long at shelter/rescue: Since June 2014
Type/Size/Sex: Keegan is a mixed-breed boy, about 45-50 lbs. and full of love!
Likes: He loves toys, balls, tug of war, and playing with other dogs.
Dislikes: A happy boy most all the time, Keegan (understandably) doesn’t like being in a cage for too long.
Special considerations: Like most dogs, Keegan is interested in chasing the cats, we are not sure what he would do if he caught one. So, a home without cats would be best. But, he loves to play with other dogs! He doesn’t bond immediately with people – something in his past may have taught him to be cautious – he likes to observe them first but once he knows you are nice, he’ll follow you everywhere.
The perfect family or home for Keegan: An active family that’s looking for a best friend, a buddy, to play and enjoy life together.
